Voting Guide: Why Luke Searle is the Pragmatic Choice for HD59
Welcome back to our GOP voting guide series. Today, we are focusing on the upcoming election for Utah House District 59 and why Luke Searle is the pragmatic choice to represent our community.
If we want a representative who can get things done and ensure our community has a seat at the table in a heavily red state, Luke is the answer. Raised here and currently raising his family here, Luke understands the Wasatch Back because it is his home.
On the other hand, we have serious concerns about his opponent, Celeste Johnson. We need a representative who understands our local issues and knows how to work within the legislature, rather than someone focused on feel-good activism and raising our cost of living.
When comparing the two candidates, the choice for Summit and Wasatch counties is clear:
Tax Relief vs. Tax Increases: On the Wasatch County Council, Luke fought for property tax relief for working families and seniors. Meanwhile, as Midway Mayor, Celeste Johnson proposed tax increases, and she continues to oppose broad tax cuts today.
Local Control Over Developer Interests: Luke has consistently stood up against top-down state mandates and refuses to take developer money. In contrast, Johnson is actively taking campaign donations from developers in the Wasatch Back.
Pragmatic Representation vs. Activism: Johnson’s proud background in public-facing, left-leaning activism risks making her an ineffective voice for us in the State House. Johnson's recent behavior highlights a concerning mindset: as documented in a recent Park Record report, she wore a homemade "no kings" dress to a rally while simultaneously stating, “I think I’m in charge of the world. That’s just my nature.”
We need a public servant who listens and delivers for the Wasatch Back, not someone who views themselves as being in charge of the world. If you want to send someone to the State House simply to fight the GOP, Johnson is your candidate. But if you want a dedicated, collaborative voice who will fight to bring back local control, Luke is the clear choice.
