GOP Voting Guide: Vote FOR Amendment B to Protect Taxpayers

Thank you for reviewing our 2026 GOP voting guide series. Today, we are taking a look at Constitutional Amendment B, a critical measure designed to protect Utah families, workers, and small businesses from easy tax hikes.

Tax increases affect every single family budget and shape our state's economy. However, under current law, special interest groups and out-of-state campaigns can pass statewide citizen initiatives that create or raise taxes with a razor-thin 50% plus one majority vote.

While elected officials who raise taxes face voters at the ballot box and can be voted out, tax increases passed through citizen initiatives are far less accountable—they are written by proponents without legislative review and can only be undone by another costly campaign.

Amendment B sets a higher, common-sense standard for taking more money out of your paycheck. Here is why you should vote FOR Amendment B:

  • A Higher Bar for Higher Taxes: Requires any statewide citizen-led ballot initiative that creates new taxes or raises existing tax rates to earn at least 60% voter approval to pass.

  • Protects Utah Wallets: Prevents well-funded, out-of-state interest groups from imposing long-term tax hikes on Utah taxpayers with a narrow majority vote.

  • Ensures Broad Consensus: Demands that any proposed tax increase demonstrates widespread agreement across communities and political viewpoints before taking effect.

  • Preserves Direct Democracy: Protects the citizen initiative process for non-tax issues while ensuring that proposals affecting every taxpayer's wallet have strong public backing.

If a proposal is going to take more money out of your family budget, it should have broad agreement. Vote FOR Constitutional Amendment B to protect Utah taxpayers!
